In the recent years, aquaculture became one of the most promising food sectors over the past ten years. With a growth rate of 5.8% per annum globally, it is one of the fastest growing food production sectors in the world. It also has a direct impact on local economies; more than 90% of European aquaculture businesses are SMEs, representing around 80 000 jobs.

COVID-19 upended life as we know it, affecting how we work, who we interact with, and even what we eat. The impacts of COVID-19 on the seafood sector may offer crucial lessons for making the industry more resilient and capable of minimizing economic threats to food and nutrition security, seafood-based livelihoods, and local economies caused by global pandemics.
