Waste Data Hub: Using IoT & data to improve waste management systems
< Go Back
This INNOCAP pilot from SASS will use IoT and data dashboards to improve waste management systems
11 December 2024
-
INNOCAP
project
In October,
INNOCAP project
partners gathered in Donegal, Ireland, for the fifth partnership meeting, hosted by lead partner
ERNACT
. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to review the progress of various pilot services undertaken by project partners.
During the event,
Elísabet Björney
from the
Association of Municipalities of the South Iceland (SASS)
presented their pilot project, showcasing the advancements in waste management solutions. SASS has conducted extensive analyses in the field and developed an innovative data platform called the "
Waste Data Hub.
" This disruptive technology provides monitoring and control tools that enable municipalities to make informed, strategic decisions about waste management.
The
Waste Data Hub
processes data from all waste categories within municipalities, offering insights into quantities and associated costs. This allows municipalities to evaluate their performance across different waste categories in line with EU targets and regulations. Based on these insights, municipalities can implement data-driven decisions regarding incentives, services, education initiatives, or charges for various stakeholders, including residents, institutions, and businesses. The system also enables analysis of the outcomes of these decisions over time.
Another component of the pilot service is the creation of a knowledge center to support municipalities, students, businesses, and the public in adopting better waste management practices. The
Waste Data Hub
will use open data from research initiatives and utilise IoT-enabled smart bins to collect and disseminate actionable insights.
Watch the video below to learn more about this innovative pilot service and stay tuned for more updates on INNOCAP partners’ work!
