Transforming Killybegs Information Centre with virtual tours

This Data2Sustain case study demonstrates how digital tools can bridge the gap between heritage and tourism
14 January 2026

Data2Sustain
project
ERNACT
is pleased to announce the successful completion of a digital transformation case study at
Killybegs Information Centre
, delivered through the
Data2Sustain
European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH)
. This initiative leverages immersive Virtual Reality (VR) technology to encourage visitors to explore the rich maritime heritage and hidden gems of Killybegs, County Donegal, rather than simply using the port as a transit point.
The project addresses the challenge of increasing visitor dwell time in the region. By capturing local knowledge—ranging from shipbuilding and carpet production to historical heritage sites—the collaboration has produced five high-fidelity virtual experiences. Using
VR headsets and 360° video
, tourists can now explore sites such as the
Antarctic boat
,
St. Catherine’s Heritage site, and Fintra Beach,
making local history more engaging and accessible than ever before.
Beyond enhancing the visitor experience, the project has delivered significant social impact by allowing those with reduced mobility to virtually access locations that were previously inaccessible. Additionally, staff at the Killybegs Information Centre have been upskilled in immersive technologies, ensuring the town remains a leader in digital tourism innovation. This "Test Before Invest" service demonstrates a scalable model for how digital tools can preserve local identity while driving economic growth.
Michael O’Donnell
, Director of the Killybegs Information Centre, highlighted the project’s impact: "
This solution is enabling us to show our local value, allowing visitors to get a better feel of the town because there is so much history and heritage there they can learn from. Data2Sustain EDIH was key for us to be able to display that local knowledge.
